Top Golf Course Construction Companies in India: What to Compare Before You Choose

Golf course construction firms in India fall into three groups. Here is how they differ, what to ask each, and where SGDC India fits.

Golf course construction companies in India fall into three groups: golf course architects who also manage construction, irrigation and turf contractors who deliver part of the course, and integrated developers who take a course from survey to opening under one contract. SGDC India is an integrated developer, founded in 2005 and based in New Delhi, with more than 40 delivered projects, including Qutab Golf Course, Delhi Golf Club, Bombay Presidency Golf Club and Kashmir Golf Club.

SGDC is one of the companies you would be comparing, so read this guide with that in mind. It is written to help you test any firm, including us.

What does a golf course construction company actually do?

It turns an approved design into a playable course. That means bulk earthworks and shaping, lakes, surface and subsurface drainage, irrigation, greens and tees, bunkers, cart paths, grassing and grow-in. The work is closer to civil engineering and agronomy than to landscaping, and most of what decides quality ends up underground.

How do the three types of firm differ?

  • Architect-led firms start from design. Their strength is routing and strategy. Ask who carries out the earthworks, drainage and irrigation, and who answers if those fail.
  • Specialist contractors deliver one package, such as irrigation or turf installation. They suit owners with a project manager who can coordinate several contractors.
  • Integrated developers carry construction, irrigation, turf and machinery together. There is one contract and one point of responsibility, which matters most when the drainage, irrigation and grow-in depend on one another.

What should you compare before choosing?

  1. Completed courses you can visit. Ask for courses open for at least three years, and speak to the superintendent, not only the owner.
  2. Who does the work. Find out how much is done by its own crews and how much is subcontracted.
  3. Irrigation responsibility. Ask who designs the system, who supplies it, and who supports it after handover. On a course in India, the monsoon and the dry season both test this.
  4. Greens and bunker specification. Ask for the written construction method and the materials testing behind it.
  5. Grow-in. Check whether the builder stays until the grass is established, or leaves at grassing.
  6. Life after opening. Ask who supplies the mowers, parts and service, and whether they hold parts in India.
  7. Phasing and renovation. If the course is already in play, ask how the firm keeps holes open during the work.

Where does SGDC India fit?

SGDC India was formed to be an integrated golf course development company, able to take a course from concept to completion. These are the facts to check us against:

When is an integrated builder the right choice?

It suits a new course, a resort or township course, or a full renovation, where a failure in one package can undo the work of another. If you have already appointed an independent architect, an integrated builder can still construct to that design: SGDC does both design-and-build and build to an architect. If you only need one package, such as a bunker renovation, a specialist scope is enough, and SGDC delivers those too.

How much does it cost and how long does it take?

An 18-hole course usually takes 18 to 30 months from design approval to opening. Cost depends mainly on earthworks, water and drainage, and is covered in our guide to golf course construction cost in India. The stages are set out in golf course construction from concept to completion.
