Ten years ago a golf club in India had two or three choices of cart. Today there are global fleet brands, Indian manufacturers of electric buggies, and a long tail of importers. The choice is better, and more confusing. This guide explains the categories and the questions that matter for a golf course, resort or township.
Three kinds of supplier
Global golf fleet brands. E-Z-GO, Club Car and Yamaha build vehicles specifically for golf course fleets: tens of thousands of rounds a year, course terrain, fleet-wide GPS management and a dealer network for parts and service. E-Z-GO is distributed in India by SGDC, with dealer-direct service.
Indian electric vehicle manufacturers. Several Indian companies build electric buggies for airports, campuses, hotels and events. They are competitive on price and well suited to flat paved environments. Some are used on golf courses, though their suspension, brakes, turf tyres and controllers are generally not designed for daily rounds on a course.
Importers and assemblers. A large number of carts sold online are imported or assembled from kits. Quality varies widely, parts supply is often the weak point, and warranties are difficult to enforce. For a fleet that must work every morning, this is the riskiest route.
What a golf course actually needs
- A chassis, suspension and brakes rated for course terrain and for passengers carrying bags.
- Turf-friendly tyres and a weight that does not mark wet greens surrounds.
- A powertrain that completes 36 holes on a charge or a tank in Indian summer heat.
- Fleet management: geofencing, pace-of-play, lockouts around greens and wet areas.
- Parts in India, trained technicians and a warranty that is honoured.
Electric, lithium or petrol
Petrol carts are robust and simple, and still common on hilly courses. Lead-acid electric carts are quiet and cheap to run but need watering and periodic battery replacement. Lithium carts such as the E-Z-GO ELiTE range are now the default for new fleets: lighter, faster to charge, maintenance-free batteries and a lower cost of ownership over the life of the fleet.
How to compare quotations
Compare the five-year cost of ownership, not the invoice. Include batteries, tyres, service, downtime and the resale or buy-back value. Ask each supplier for a reference course in India where their fleet has run for at least three years, and speak to the superintendent.
Where SGDC fits
SGDC India is the official E-Z-GO distributor for India, supplying Valor, Liberty, Freedom RXV and RXV fleets with PACE Technology, dealer-direct service and financing. Because we also build and maintain courses, we specify carts for the terrain they will actually run on, and our technicians service Jacobsen mowers and E-Z-GO carts from the same workshop.
