Walk onto many golf courses at six in the morning and the first thing you hear is the maintenance fleet. For courses next to homes, hotels and resorts, that noise is a real problem. Increasingly, the answer is electric.
Why lithium, and why now
Battery technology has moved quickly. Lithium batteries are lighter and more compact than the lead-acid batteries that powered earlier electric vehicles, they need no watering or equalising, and they deliver steady power across the charge.
For golf courses, that translates into three practical benefits:
- Near-silent operation, so greens can be mowed early without disturbing neighbours or guests.
- Zero exhaust and no hydraulic oil on the cutting units, removing the risk of a hydraulic leak burning a line across a green.
- Lighter machines, which put less pressure on the turf.
Electric greens mowing: the Jacobsen Eclipse 360 ELiTE
Jacobsen Eclipse 360 ELiTE is a fully electric riding greens mower powered by a lithium battery using Samsung SDI technology. It has no hydraulic system, offers a choice of reel blade counts to match the grass and height of cut, and includes on-board diagnostics. Jacobsen says it can cut more than 50 large greens on a single charge.
For Indian courses that sit inside residential townships, a quiet greens mower that can start at first light is more than a sustainability statement; it is a practical way to fit maintenance in before the first tee time.
Electric golf carts: E-Z-GO ELiTE
The same thinking applies to the cart fleet. The E-Z-GO ELiTE lithium carts use Samsung SDI lithium technology, and the lighter battery helps reduce wear on turf and cart paths. Models such as the Valor, Liberty, Freedom RXV and RXV are available in lithium and petrol versions in 2 to 4 seat layouts. The E-Z-GO PACE fleet-management technology adds GPS tools to monitor the fleet and communicate with golfers.
What to plan for before switching
- Charging infrastructure: plan charging points and power supply for the whole fleet, not just the first few machines.
- Power quality: voltage fluctuations are common in parts of India, so build in proper protection for chargers.
- Heat: store and charge machines in shaded, ventilated areas during the summer months.
- Total cost of ownership: compare fuel, oil and maintenance savings over the life of the machine, not just the purchase price.
- Service support: make sure your supplier can diagnose and repair electric systems locally.
The direction of travel
Indian newest golf developments are increasingly built as part of premium residential and hospitality projects, where noise, emissions and guest experience matter. Electric maintenance equipment and lithium carts fit naturally into that model.
SGDC India supplies Jacobsen turf equipment and E-Z-GO golf carts, with local service support. Talk to us about planning an electric fleet for your course.
