Indian love of sport is changing how its grounds are built and maintained. Stadiums, cricket academies, schools, universities and corporate campuses are investing in natural turf fields, and players, broadcasters and parents now expect surfaces that look and play like the ones they see on television.
Golf course turf care has a lot to teach sports grounds. The same principles of cutting, aeration, drainage and consistency apply, with different demands from the game.
What a great sports field needs
- A dense, even sward that recovers quickly from wear.
- A firm, level surface that gives a true bounce and a predictable ball roll.
- Good drainage, so play can resume quickly after monsoon showers.
- Clear, accurate line markings.
Mowing large areas well
Cricket outfields and football pitches are large, open areas where productivity matters as much as quality of cut. Tractor-mounted roller mowers are a cost-effective answer. The Wessex CRX-320 is a 3.2 metre roller mower with full-width front and rear rollers that follow ground contours closely and leave a striped finish, with height of cut adjustable from 10 to 100 mm. Because it runs off an existing compact tractor, it can be a more economical option than a dedicated self-propelled mower.
For smaller grounds and surrounds, rotary mowers from Ransomes and articulating rotary mowers from Lastec handle mixed terrain and slopes efficiently.
Aeration and drainage
Heavy use and monsoon rain compact sports fields quickly. Regular deep-tine aeration with machines such as the Wiedenmann Terra Spike range relieves compaction, improves drainage and encourages deeper roots. Aeration timed before the monsoon and again after heavy-use periods makes a significant difference to how quickly a field recovers.
Line marking
Accurate markings are part of a professional presentation. Modern spray line markers, such as Pitchmark machines, apply paint consistently and economically, reducing waste and time spent re-marking.
Planning for multi-use
Many Indian venues host cricket, football, athletics and events on the same field. Multi-use fields need a maintenance plan that balances heavy wear with recovery windows, and equipment that can switch quickly between tasks.
From golf courses to sports grounds
SGDC India began as a golf course development company and has grown into a professional sports ground development company, building and equipping multi-use sports fields alongside golf courses. The same team, brands and service support now serve both.
If you manage a stadium, academy, school or campus ground, talk to SGDC India about building or maintaining a field to professional standard.
